Viktor Blom is yet to establish himself in live poker tournaments, but online poker fans around the world are aware of Viktor or rather Isildur1, his virtual name. He caught the attention of the poker world in 2009, when he competed in all the 10 biggest pots in online poker. He played under his screen name and kept his identity hidden. Until recently it was a mystery that Isildur1 is actually Viktor Blom. Expectations from this 20 year old talented player are very high.
As the fact that Viktor Blom is Isildur1 was a revealed only recently, not much is known about this young player. He was born in Ranas, Stockholm, Sweden in August 1990. The Blom family includes his parents, an older brother called Sebastian and two elder sisters. It is believed that Victor learnt how to play poker from his brother when he was around fifteen.
Poker Career – The Mystery of Isildur1
Viktor started playing online poker at the age of 18. It is believed that he played under the screen names of Blom90 and blom90_fan at online gaming site PartyPoker. His hyper aggressive style of play is considered as juvenile and risky by many poker professionals. Re-raises and large bet bluffs are a big part of his style of playing poker. But Viktor seems to have perfected this style. It has helped him turn small deposits into millions within a very short period.
At just 18 years of age, with a bankroll of $2000, Viktor managed to earn close to $2,000,000 within a few weeks with his highly aggressive play. Within a year of playing online poker, the 2008 Scandinavian Poker awards declared Viktor as the rookie of the year. His style of playing sets him apart from the rest and makes him one of the most unpredictable poker players. He often places large bets even when he has nothing in hand. As a result of such play, his bankroll often shows massive ups and downs. He also tends to play at multiple tables online. This initial success made Viktor so confident of his skills that he decided to take on the world’s best players. His massive bankroll allowed him to play with the pros online.
Viktor started playing on Full Tilt Poker under the screen name of Isildur1 on the 16th of September 2009. His coming to the site was just the beginning of an epic poker match. Viktor started by playing $500 – $1000 stake games and challenging poker champions like Phil Ivey, Cole South, Patrik Antonius, Brian Townsend and Tom Dwan. Two months later Viktor’s bankroll reached a record high of $5,000,000. Within a short time he had managed to relieve Patrik Antonius and Tom ‘Durrrr’ Dwan of $1.4 million and $5 million respectively. But soon he had to face many major losses as well.
Antonius challenged Viktor for a rematch and ended up bringing down his bankroll by $3,000,000. It was the biggest gain and loss within a single day in the online poker history. In a rematch the following day, Viktor was able to win back $2,000,000 from Antonius. He also lost close to $3,200,000 in one week of play with Phil Ivey. He later told in an interview that Phil is the strongest opponent he has come across. Brian Hastings also won $4.2 million from Viktor within 5 hours of play, making a new online poker record. It was later discovered that Townsend compiled and shared data on Viktor’s last 30,000 hands with Cole and Hastings. As it is against Full Tilt Poker rules to share such information, it resulted in Townsend losing his Red Pro status on the site for a month.
All this added to the mystery surrounding this young player. It created a buzz among poker players round the world. Everyone was trying to guess the real identity of this mystery player. The only thing people were sure about was that the player was from Sweden. Many people believed that it was a well known poker professional who did not want to reveal his identity, but hardly anyone thought that it was an 18 year kid.
Viktor was obsessed about keeping his identity a secret and it prevented him from taking part in any major live tournaments. After joining the PokerStars pro team, his identity could no longer remain hidden. On the 8th of January in 2011, it was finally confirmed by PokerStars at the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure that Viktor Blom is the man behind the screen name Isildur1. With his stormy success in online poker, great things are expected from this young player in live tournaments as well.
