Family Background

Jamie Gold was born as Jamie M. Usher on 25th August 1969 in Kansas City, Missouri. Following his parents’ divorce, Jamie and his mother moved to Manhattan. After the second marriage of his mother, to Dr. Robert Gold, his name was changed to Jamie Gold. He was raised by his stepfather and mother in Paramus, New Jersey. He graduated from Paramus High School in year 1987. He received his bachelor’s degree in 1991from the State University of New York in Albany and went to UCLA to study entertainment law.

Career Beginning and Entry into the World of Poker

Jamie began his career in the field of entertainment at the J. Michael Bloom and Associates talent Agency as an intern at the young at of sixteen. By the age of 21, he was a talent agent. He soon moved into production and management. He is well known in Hollywood for finding new talent and has worked with an impressive list of clients.

Even as a youngster, Gold took keen interest in poker. With a gin rummy champion grandfather and a keen poker player mother like Jane, this was natural. However, he began taking a serious interest in the game while working in an upcoming television show featuring former WSOP main event winners Chris Moneymaker and Johnny Chan. Soon Gold was being mentored by Chan to play professional poker.

He began playing regularly in poker tournaments from year 2005. His first major poker win was at Bicycle Casino in no limit Texas Hold’em, which earned him $54,225. Since then, Gold has been one of the most well-known figures in poker circles.

2006 WSOP Main Event Win and the Subsequent Controversy

Right from the beginning, Gold was successful in maintaining a significant lead to ultimately win the WSOP main event No Limit Texas Hold’em, $10,000 buy-in, in the year 2006. His playing style has been criticized by many, but he was encouraged by poker legend Chris Ferguson to stick to his perfected style. Gold confirmed in many interviews that Chris was one of the few professionals to support his style of playing poker. During the 2006 WSOP, Gold pressurized his opponents to risk it all and if re-raised, he made uncannily accurate decisions about whether to fold or not.

Contrary to the WSOP rules, Gold has a tendency of telling his table mates his actual hand. During the 2006 WSOP, he confused one of his opponents with a better hand to fold by actually flashing a face card. Although not penalized, Gold is criticized by many for such tactics. Even with only two wins and 13 money tournament finishes, his live tournament winnings were in the excess of $12,100,000 in 2008. A major portion of these winnings have been earned in cashes at the WSOP. He is known as the 1st person to earn more than $10,000,000 in poker tournaments.

Bodog.com sponsored Gold during the 2006 WSOP. Following his win, Gold entered into a 2 year production and endorsement contract with Bodog, but was dropped in January 2007. He was also sued by poker player Crispin Leyser, who claimed half of his 2006 WSOP winnings. The case was settled out of the court after 2 years. In spite of everything, Gold continues to be a constant fixture in the world of poker.
