Howard Lederer

Having grown up playing poker with his family, Howard Lederer learnt the game at an early age. He then went on to play poker as a teenager and master the game, earning himself two bracelets at the World Series of Poker (WSOP) tournaments. Lederer has also won two World Poker Tournament Titles (WPT) and been named the WPT Player of the Year in 2003. Lederer’s tournament earnings during his career as a poker player exceed $6 million.

His strategic approach to the game, on the basis of theories, has earned him the nickname ‘The Professor’. True to the name, Lederer has been an instructor and ambassador for the game, which has led many in the industry to look up to him. This successful player has also provided commentary and analysis on poker through various media, which has allowed people to get familiar with him.lederer

Learning and Analyzing Poker – 1980s

During the 1980s, Lederer spent most of his time studying and playing poker. He started playing the game in New York, where he suffered many losses. This drove him to run errands for other players in the club, so he could earn money for his tournament buy-ins. He then spent some time at the Mayfair Club, New York, where he studied the nuances of poker along with a few other poker players who are now famous – Steven Zolotow, Dan Harrington and Erik Seidel.

Lederer dedicated almost eighty hours a week to playing and learning the game. During this time, the No-Limit Hold’em version of poker was introduced to the city, where players, including Lederer, developed an interest in it. Following their marathon sessions of poker, Lederer and other players would spend time going over their opponents’ moves and strategies. Lederer played in the 1987 WSOP tournament, in which he came fifth.

Beginning of Poker Career – 1990s

It was 1993 that Lederer moved his gaming action to Vegas, where he started his poker career. By playing No-Limit Hold’em tournaments with massive buy-ins and cash games, Lederer made a name for himself in the poker playing circle. Since then, he has played many major tournaments and become a force to reckon with.

Lederer’s first success as a high-profile player was during the 1994 Hall of Fame Poker Classic. In this tournament, he played the $2,500 buy-in No-Limit Deuce to Seven Draw event. Lederer won the same event a year later, retaining the title for two years consecutively.

Establishing His Position in the Game – 2000s

Lederer has also been a part of the ‘Corporation’, a team that played against Andy Beal, a billionaire with a penchant for playing high stakes poker games. The syndicate’s games against the businessman are considered the highest stakes to have been played in poker.

Lederer won his first WSOP bracelet in 2000, when he played the Limit Omaha Hi/Lo event with a $5,000 buy-in. The following year, Lederer got his second WSOP bracelet playing the Deuce to Seven event, which too had a buy-in of $5,000.

Following this, in 2002, he earned his first WPT Championship, at an event held at Foxwoods. Lederer soon won his second WPT Championship title in 2003. It was a Limit Hold’em event, held on the Poker Million Cruise, with a $5,000 buy-in.

This was soon followed by three titles – the Bellagio Five Star World Poker Classic of 2003, Bellagio’s No-Limit Hold’em event with a $2,500 buy-in and the Pot Limit Omaha event with a $5,000 buy-in. The last two events were held in 2004, just two weeks apart.

In 2007, Lederer participated in Poker After Dark and defeated his opponents. This brought him a total of $240,000. The 6th Poker Million, which took place in London, saw Lederer earn $125,000, when he came fifth. In 2010, Lederer reached the final table in the 9th Poker Million.

2008 saw Lederer making a massive $1.25 million at the Aussie Millions’ No-Limit Hold’em event with a $100,000 buy-in. He continued his success with three major wins at the WSOP, making it to two finals. At the World Series of Poker Europe (WSOPE), held in London two months later, Lederer earned third place. This was a HORSE event with a £2,500 buy-in. He had become richer by 1.4 million through his tournament earnings over this period.

Lederer is currently a part of Team Full Tilt, a group of professional poker players who have made it big. He offers educative analysis of poker on the site. He is also the dean of the Full Tilt Poker Academy, which has resources that poker players can use. Lederer has also developed the Howard Lederer Poker Fantasy Camp, a platform which allows poker players to learn from the best.
