The whole poker industry sat at the edge of their seats as Viktor Blom and Phil Ivey’s names got into the leaderboard of the WSOPE Main Event. Now, however, everything just seems anticlimactic, as both of them were ousted from the game last Monday, spelling an end for our visions of clashing titans. But that’s not to say that it will no longer be worth it to watch as the final table unfolds. After all, with only 15 players remaining, the Main Event has finally arrived at the most exciting part, this time with Ronald Lee in the lead with 1,727,000 chips and Arnaud Mattern at the bottom with 225,000 chips.
How Ivey and Blom Made their Exit
Ivey was the first one to be eliminated among the two, having been sent to the rail at 19th place by Ronald Lee. His A-10 clashed with Ronald Lee’s A-K. Lee’s hand was naturally stronger than Ivey’s, but when a King fell on the Turn, the pot was automatically shipped to him, and Ivey was sent packing. He was only 18 players away from winning his 9th WSOP bracelet, and it truly must’ve hurt since he showed some great reluctance in speaking with the media afterward. He is now most likely playing online on the high stakes poker tables at Full Tilt Poker. It probably couldn’t hurt more, however, than what Viktor Blom is experiencing. He was sent packing at 16th place, just 1 player short of getting into the final 15. He made the mistake of calling all-in right before the flop with pocket eights. Brian Powell had a K-Q so he readily called. When the flop was revealed to be 7-7-Q, Powell was gifted with the lead, and Blom too was sent packing. Like Ivey, he declined to comment on his loss, despite the media’s attempts to persuade him.
The Survivors
Those who ousted these two huge pros, Ronald Lee and Brian Powell, now sit comfortably at the top 10. Ronald Lee himself is at the top spot and Powell is at 7th place. Of course, day 4 hasn’t concluded yet and is only halfway through, so it’s too early to tell if they will survive. Some notable pros who still have a chance to grab the bracelet include Hoyt Corkins, Daniel Steinberg, and Roland de Wolfe. Fifteen players are left, though all of them are now in the money and are assured a sizeable £42,000 each. The winner will receive a shiny new WSOP bracelet and £830,000.
