It’s one of the biggest honors to be called the CardPlayer Player of the Year, especially since the competition is pretty stiff and you practically need to have a very consistent, not to mention impressive, performance the whole year round to even have a chance at winning. That Tom Marchese earned the title right in time for Christmas must have made the holidays extra special for him. Having earned 6,738 points, he managed to beat Dwyte Pilgrim – no small feat, considering that Pilgrim had an excellent year as well.
Marchese’s 2010
For Marchese to have wont the CardPlayer PotY Award, he must have had a rather excellent year. Indeed, with his $2 million in live tournament earnings during 2010 alone, Marchese certainly did quite well for himself and more. His first cash in 2010 was last February where he won third place in the Borgata Winter Poker Open Main Event, earning $190,000 for himself. He didn’t waste any time in winning another title. Just a few weeks after his win at the Borgata Winter Open, he won the PokerStars North American Poker Tour Venetian Main Event where he won himself a whopping $827,000. Barely a month had passed until Marchese managed to finish deep in yet another big tournament, this time the EPT Monte Carlo where he won $350,000 for finishing in fourth place. Of course, the year wouldn’t be complete if he hadn’t had an excellent performance at the WSOP. Marchese managed to win $123,000 at the $10,000 Pot Limit Hold’em Championship, where he managed to reach the final table.
Then he won another $157,000 where he finished seventh in the EPT London Main Event. As if that wasn’t enough, Marchese also finished third at the WPT Foxwoods World Poker Finals, which earned him an impressive $211,000. He did best with live tournaments, of course, but that doesn’t mean that he didn’t do well online. Last June, he won at the Full Tilt Online Poker Series which earned him $192,000. He even managed to sign with Poker Icons, one of the most popular management firms in the industry.
Player of the Year
Of course, Marchese was thrilled about this development. He says that he is “ecstatic” over being the PotY and that it is something that he truly worked hard on. Of course, with his list of achievements this 2010 alone, there’s no doubt at all that Marchese deserves the title perfectly. Second place went to Dwyte Pilgrim, and third to Sorel “Imper1um” Mizzi.
