Tom ‘durrrr’ Dwan has always been something of a role model to the new generation of poker players. His aggressive style of play that seems unintelligible to anyone but himself has always attracted the awe of fellow players, and even more so when he suffers from a huge loss but still manages to take it all in stride. Indeed, there’s no doubt that this guy has made his mark on the game and has become one of the biggest names in the industry despite his tender age. However, throughout his career, he has generally been quiet about his opinions on the game, but now he said something that might prove disastrous in his career, especially as a Full Tilt Pro.
It was in the London World Open 6 that Tom Dwan said something that might irk some of his fans. Then again, opinions tend to gravitate towards the opposite sides of the spectrum in the poker industry, so while some were pretty disappointed, there were others who lauded him for his honesty. What exactly did he say, you ask? Well, he practically admitted that he plays poker for the money alone. He was asked in an interview at the London World Open if he was in any way satisfied with the fact that other pros discussed his abilities and considered him as one of the best in the industry.
He answered bluntly, saying ‘No, that’s not why I play poker. I don’t care about the competition, just the money.” As if that classic case of word vomit wasn’t enough, he went on to say that top pros who say they play because they ‘love the game’ are just bluffing and that if he didn’t make cash with the game, he wouldn’t bother with it at all. He also said that anytime he played for high stakes, he usually never cares about competition, only about the money, and that the only people he really ‘competes’ with are his friends at home.
The Bright Side
He did say some pretty nice things, though, like when he said that he is the same person now as he was before, just with more money. Keeping level-headed like this despite the mind-blowing success he has experienced is pretty impressive, and speaks a lot about him as a person. Still, his comment about playing only for the money might be deemed as simply honest, and sometimes honesty is much better than the pretentions of some pros out there. It’s actually refreshing and could be taken in a more positive light, other than the insult it first comes off as. Besides, if this view on the game has made him millions of dollars, then there’s probably nothing wrong with it.
