The Black Friday That Was

One month has already come and gone, and the repercussions of the Black Friday can still be felt all around the online gambling industry. Players of the affected online poker sites are scrambling to get their money, and the online poker sites themselves are scrambling to set things right. This issue, however, is far from over.

The Big Bully

This is what the online poker industry is calling the Department of Justice of the United States, the big bully. Antigua is complaining that what the United States did was unlawful, that it was against the international trade agreements. In fact, Antigua released a statement that it is going to plan to file a case against the country.

Right now, the accounts of the three online poker sites involved in the indictment are frozen. Their .com domains have also been seized. Because of this, players are having a difficult time withdrawing their money at these online poker sites. The online poker sites themselves are having difficulties straightening the mess out. There is the pressure coming from the United States and the pressure coming from their players.

The Repercussions

What happened last Black Friday is not all bad though. It was bad for the involved parties, of course, and their players, especially since each minute is revenue lost. However, other smaller online poker sites benefited from the said incident.

Online poker sites such as William Hill as well as 888 are reporting increased traffic. Ever since Black Friday, a huge number of poker players are preferring to play cash games at these smaller online poker rooms. The sites are also reporting a bigger number of registrations at their sites. Black Friday, for the smaller and less popular operators, became a way for them to showcase their services and reliability.

The UIGEA passed last 2006 discouraged a lot of affiliates from partnering up with online casinos based in the United States. This recent move by the US DOJ only encouraged these affiliates all the more to keep away from US-based online casinos and online poker sites. Right now, affiliate sites are preferring to partner up with non-US based online poker sites just to avoid the heat. This, of course, means lost revenues.

The fate of online poker really is unknown. Some are pushing for it to be legalized, while others want the opposite.

On a happy note though, cashouts are now in progress.
