In this day and age, it’s pretty hard to imagine that spies still exist. Of course, that’s probably because our idea of spies involves high-tech gadgets and James Bond-esque characters. But in reality, the world of spies and espionage is far less glamorous. This was proven just recently when Anna Chapman, a gorgeous Manhattan socialite who turned out to be a Russian spy, was caught by the FBI along with the other members of the said ‘sleeper’ spy ring. It was also revealed that Chapman was hoping to operate her own online poker site and was actively searching for investors in her endeavor.
About Anna Chapman
It seems almost surreal how a real spy was caught, especially one that was hiding among the elite of Manhattan. But that’s exactly what happened when the FBI closed in on the Russian ‘sleeper’ spy ring, one of its members being Anna Chapman. Chapman was sending classified information to Russia through her computer. Apparently, her responsibilities included passing info about the Obama administration’s goals and policies. She was also tasked to gather data on the upcoming summit meeting. Chapman was actually posing as a socialite in Manhattan. She is a very gorgeous woman, after all, and was easily able to fit in with that elitist crowd.
She mingled with high-ranking officials in several organizations with the sole purpose of furthering her financial and espionage aims. By ‘mingling’, I mean flirting and possibly going even further than that. That said, she ‘flirted’ with several congress lawyers, military scientists, and political fundraisers. She was also the ‘owner’ of a real estate business, though those around her said in an interview after the arrest that Chapman actually didn’t know much about the business. She was a pretty talented spy, but she made the mistake of handing her fake passport to an undercover cop. This was the beginning of the end for her as the FBI cracked down on her soon after.
Chapman and Poker
What ties here to the poker industry was the ambition she harbored. She wanted to be the owner of an online poker site and was gathering money from investors in Moscow, one of them being Alexander Galitsky. Galitsky is a managing partner for a Russian capital investment firm who was contacted by Chapman about the said venture. However, like Real Estate, Chapman apparently knew little about the industry.
