Successful poker movies are few and far between. It’s hard to use this game as a premise for a movie, despite its potential when it comes to excitement and intrigue. Indeed, m ost of the movies that have poker as their focus have more or less flopped in the silver screen. Truly successful poker movies can only be counted on one hand, with Rounders being one of them. It’s a great treat for poker fans, then, that Miramax has confirmed that they will be filming the sequel to this great poker movie. Details are still sparse, though, but just that thought that Rounders 2 will be coming to the big screen is enough of a Christmas gift to poker fans everywhere.

Rounders is a film about the underground world of high-stakes poker. It stars Matt Damon and Edward Norton, both of whom are “rounders”. Rounders are people who make a living out solely of playing cards. Needless to say, it’s a pretty dangerous and unstable profession, and it’s not really surprising that Mike, Matt Damon’s character, loses his entire bankroll one day. He promises to quit gambling thereafter and begins to focus on law school, much to the delight of his girlfriend, Jo. However, when his friend, “Worm”, played by Edward Norton, is released from prison, he influences Matt to go back to the felt. To compound the problems, Worm also has a huge debt, for which he has a five day period for paying. This is where their adventure begins, but I don’t really want to spoil the details for you.

It’s a cult favorite of poker fans, so you might want to check it out yourself if you haven’t seen it yet. At the very end of themovie, though, Mike is shown breaking up with his girlfriend and heading to Vegas to play in the WSOP. This is where the sequel will probably pick up. Does Mike win the WSOP or does he fade into oblivion? Did he rock Vegas or did Vegas knock him down? Well, those are questions yet unanswered, especially since it’s still unsure whether the sequel will really be about Mike.

The Sequel

There’s a big chance that it will still be about the original characters, though, especially since most of the major actors in the first movie have indicated that they’re perfectly willing to go back for a reunion. Indeed, there’s a lot of anticipation already bubbling in the poker community. Hopefully, Rounders really will pick up where the first movie left off, just to show an update on Mike’s and Worm’s lives.
