It’s a dark day for the poker industry as it is once again reminded of how vulnerable casinos can be to theft and robbery. Just recently, the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, which is the venue of the WSOP, has been robbed by a man with a gun. The thief managed to take $35,000. Luckily, nobody was hurt since the man never bothered to shoot his gun. Still, the threat was there, and it was yet another security breach that rattled those in the poker industry.
The Story
The beginning of the whole incident was nothing short of bizarre. The suspect, a white male with a mustache who looks to be in his 40’s, simply walked into the casino and proceeded to take some chips off one of the tables. The dealer, of course, tried to stop this. It was at this point that the man took out a gun, threatening the dealer and those around him. Nobody contested him then and the man did not have to fire his gun. With $35,000 in tow, the man simply exited the casino and hopped into a taxi. He was dropped off at the Terrible’s Casino and subsequently disappeared. The police have yet to take any suspects into custody.
One of the reasons that they might be having trouble locating the criminal is because there’s a big possibility that he might have been wearing a disguise when he committed the robbery. The mustache could have been – and probably was – fake. He was also wearing a fedora as well as some sunglasses. Identifying him may be rather difficult despite the number of witnesses. The incident happened early in the morning at around 4am. Hopefully, this incident won’t have an effect on the upcoming WSOP tournament which will be held a mere three months from now.
A Stream of Robberies
Recently, it seems as if Las Vegas has been the target of several robberies. This most recent one, however, pales in comparison to the Bellagio Robbery, where the thief walked away with over a million dollars in terms of chips. They already have a suspect for that incident, one Anthony Carleo, who tried to sell the chips he stole at the TwoPlusTwo forums. Furthermore, the Bellagio is already going to disable the $25,000 chips, so if ever the thief tries to redeem them, he will be apprehended.
