Poker Hall of Fame Nominations now Officially Open

It’s that time of the year again where we fans get to help choose who deserves to be listed in the Poker Hall of fame. It has been announced by Harrah’s officials that the nominations have begun and that it will follow the same pattern as last year. Currently 181 different individuals have been nominated, but they’re still open for new ones until August 31.

Your Opinion Counts

If you’re a poker fan and you think that some of your idols truly deserve a good spot at the Poker Hall of Fame, then why don’t you saunter on over to the official WSOP Poker website and cast your nomination? All you need to do is to give your Name, your address, your zip code, date of birth, email address, the name of your nominee and the reason why you nominated him or her. Of course, you have to be over 21 if you wish to nominate someone, as the whole thing has to be well within the bounds of the law.

Note also that the main criteria for nominations have to be followed, otherwise, your nomination is unlikely to pull through. First off, the poker player you nominated must have played against top competition – which, in a nutshell, means that if he hasn’t played with the big boys, then he’s out. Next, he must have played for high stakes. Third, he must play consistently well and he must have gained the respect of his peers. This is a difficult criteria in that it’s pretty hard to measure performance, but there’s a committee for that and you need not worry. Lastly, the player must have ‘stood the test of time’. So, for all you guys and gals out there who are thinking of nominating babies, extremely talented babies but babies nonetheless, like Annette Obrestad and Joe Cada, don’t even start. Last year, Tom “durrrr” Dwan was removed from the list of nominees despite the overwhelming amount of votes cast for him due to this category.

It’s highly unlikely that they’ll let one slip this time.

New Rules

The list of the top 10 nominees will be released on September 1st, and it will be submitted to a committee which will decide whether or not the list is right. The voting trend will follow last year’s pattern – that is, the decision will hinge on the members of the HoF and some members of the media – but there will be some marked differences. Last year, you may remember that there was only one inductee into the HoF and that was Mike Sexton. This was probably because the threshold, a whopping 75%, was pretty steep. This year, they’re lowering it to 50%, which will undoubtedly make it easier for deserving pros to get in.
