The poker industry may be on the rise these years, but it still hasn’t changed the fact that the law tends to be cruel to it. Each small victory is fiercely fought for by poker enthusiasts, with the Poker Player’s Alliance at the helm. The PPA’s most recent creation is PlayerBeforeProfits.com, a website designed to gather signatures in support of HR 2267, or the Internet Gambling Regulation, Consumer Protection, and Enforcement Act.
HR 2267
There’s quite a debate raging between factions in the gambling industry, some of them in support of HR 2267 and some of them completely against it. Tom Malkasian, owner of Commerce Casino, has mentioned that the HR 2267 is “fundamentally flawed and unsound” and is in stern opposition of it. However, PPA Executive Director, John Pappas, countered Malkasian, saying that Malkasian isn’t really against online gambling per se, but only wants to have monopoly on it. He went on to say that monopolies, from a consumer’s viewpoint, are essentially useless and don’t provide the best service.
It’s incredibly profitable for casinos, true, but ultimately, monopolies don’t provide the consumers with many choices, thus discouraging improvement. After all, if you’re the only one selling donuts, and people absolutely need donuts, then they have no choice but to buy from you no matter how poorly you make those donuts. Commerce Casino wants to create a California-only network for online poker, which would create an immensely limited field for those living in the area. Of course, during the hearing, Commerce sugarcoated this aim of theirs by saying that HR 2267 is unsound. But HR 2267, if you trust the PPA’s word on it (which you should), is sure to be beneficial to poker players, especially those in California, which is why you might want to consider heading into their site and signing the petition yourself.
Staggering Support
Currently, the petition has reached its 9,000th mark, 9,050 to be exact. They’re nearing 10,000 signatures, which means that the movement is becoming noticed by many throughout the world. They’re even encouraging the supporters to post on their Twitter accounts, facebook accounts, etc, to promote the site. Some of the world’s biggest pros have also thrown their weight behind the movement, namely Doyle Brunson, Patrik Antonius, Tom Dwan, Barry Greenstein, Erik Seidel, Jennifer Harman, Gus Hansen, and a lot more. They have helped a lot in getting the movement some attention, so if you’re reading this right now, why not lend your signature to PPA too for a good cause?
