New Poker Show in the Works

Word has just come out that a new TV series that focuses on the game of poker will be released in the near future. Jenji Kohan and Matthew Salsberg, executive producers of the TV show Weeds, are teaming up to create yet another comedy series. This time, it’s about a group of young poker players who have their sights set on the WSOP Grand Prize. The show will be entitled ‘Whales’.

Of Whales and Weeds

It’s always exciting to find out that the people over at Hollywood have taken notice of the game of poker. Of course, it has been gathering quite a large fan base over the recent years, so it’s no surprise that the big fish up there have seen the insane amount of revenue that the game can generate. But the problem with using poker as a basis for a show is that it’s pretty difficult to get things right. At first glance, one might think it’s a simple matter, but then experience has shown that attempts at making Poker shows or Poker movies have more or less been failures, so much so that most fans prefer to forget that they ever existed in the first place. This time, though, there’s real hope, especially since Weeds is a highly acclaimed TV show, and the fact that two if its executive producers are on board on the new project can only mean good things for the poker industry.

Whales will be about a group of aspiring poker players who have just moved to Vegas in order to participate in the WSOP. There’s a $10 million prize that’s up for grabs and everybody wants a piece of it. They’re not your typical hopefuls, though. The players are all quirky and brilliant, some of them Harvard graduates and MIT graduates. They’ve decided to live together in a lavish apartment as they pursue their dreams. The show will run about 30 minutes each, though how long the series will be is still unknown. Who the cast will be has been left in the dark as well. In fact, few details have been given, but the possibilities are certainly endless.

An Exciting Possibility

This little tidbit of news has just been recently released, but anticipation is already high among fans of the game. One of the reasons for this is the possibility of some of the biggest pros doing cameos on the series. It’s not farfetched to think that pros like Hellmuth would be appearing in the show at one point or another.
