It’s nice to know that there are still some people out there who are capable of making a successful poker movie. God knows we’ve been deprived of good poker movies despite the game’s rise in popularity. So, if you want your poker movie fix, try watching “Hitting the Nuts: The True Story of the Scott County Series of Poker”. It’s a satirical indie film by Rebel Pilgrim Productions that recently won the Best Feature Film in the Derby City Film Festival which took place last February 21.
A Poker Success
Hollywood has a record of hits and misses in making films about poker. There is, therefore, a lot of poetic justice in the idea that an indie company was the one able to make a completely successful one. Albeit we should keep in mind that Hitting the Nuts isn’t exactly a poker movie, more of a documentary – or, as the film makers would say, a “mockumentary”. Many elements of satire and dry humor were employed in the film, and it will get people, especially poker players, to “laugh from start to finish”, which is exactly the goal of Nuts writer and director, Joe Boyd. The movie is set in the Scott County, Indiana where an illegal poker championship tournament is held each year.
The story focuses on a group of misfits, with Matthew Donnelly playing Bob “Dirty” Rivers, Mike Belette as Dean Livy, and Megan Whye Soule as Carol Marshall. The characters are very diverse, ranging from a gay funeral director to an Amish farmer, to – of course – the teenage poker prodigy. They, along with many others, are competing in the illegal tournament for a nifty cash prize, a ticket to Vegas, and a seat at the WSOP.
When does it come out?
Actually, the movie is already ‘out’. Hitting the Nuts premiered last October of 2010. Of course, it’s pretty hard to keep track of Indie films these days unless you’re specifically looking for one. This award, however, ensures that Hitting the Nuts will receive quite a lot of attention from the industry. The movie has already earned the notice of people from all over the world, particularly in Europe. Even people from Asia and South America have seen the film and loved it.
If you haven’t seen it yet or don’t know where to find it, don’t worry because Rebel Pilgrim Productions says that they are planning to release the movie for download through an iPhone and android app. So, if you’re starved for a good poker movie, wait a few months and you’ll have quite a tasty treat. The makers have dubbed this movie as ‘the definitive comedic satire of the poker phonemenon’ – and let me tell you, it’s exactly that and more.
