Gus Hansen’s Winning Streak Disrupted

2011 has been an excellent year for Gus Hansen. He was suffering from a slump in online poker that spanned millions of dollars, but he steadily recovered from it and even added to his wealth in a series of well-timed victories. Hansen has simply been having the time of his life, he’s already up by nearly $3 million dollars this year, and it looks as if he’s going to ride that wave of good luck well into 2012. His winning streak, however, was disrupted by Phil “OMGClayAiken” Galfond.

The Game

Phil Galfond has actually not been very active in the poker industry lately. His reemergence, though, seemed like it was what was needed to put a dent on Hansen’s solid gold streak. The two of them were playing a heads up multi-table session on – where else? – Full Tilt Poker. They were playing $500/$1,000 Pot Limit Omaha, and Galfond quickly proved his affinity for the format. He soon had $135,000 in profits over Hansen.

Not Enough

It was one of the most substantial losses during Hansen’s winning streak. But of course, Hansen wouldn’t settle for it. You know how bad luck tends to settle if you do nothing to oppose it? It’s like necrotic tissue – leave it alone and it’s likely to spread and spread until it consumes you. Well, that’s probably what Hansen was quite afraid of when he decided to keep playing. He was no longer playing against Galfond, though, so there was no way to reclaim that money he lost. Instead, he played against Doorbread and NoParasan. These two weren’t quite as lucky as Galfond. They ended up losing a lot to Hansen. In fact, Hansen’s no longer down by $135,000. He reclaimed that much money and earned an extra $100,000 to boot.

The Great Dane is truly having a spectacular year at the high stakes tables. This win of his is bringing him even closer to the $3 million bubble for 2011 alone. But he’s not the only winner at the nose bleed tables. Dan “Jungleman12” Cates’ luck seems to be holding as well, just like Hansen. He’s up by more than a hundred thousand this week alone. NoParasan, who actually lost against Hansen, also had some pretty huge wins of his own. He was fighting against cadillac1944, from whom he won a whopping $361,000. Cadillac1944, in contrast, has been having a miserable year, having already lost close to a million in 2011 alone.
