When news over Bradley Rudderman’s Ponzi scheme broke out, people were pretty shocked. What was even more shocking, though, was the fact that he blew millions of dollars on some underground high stakes poker games in Hollywood.
The Story
In the aftermath of the revelation, several big names were caught in the crossfire. The one who suffered the brunt of the damage was Tobey Maguire, whose poker skills had cost him a lawsuit demanding the return of his winnings from Ruderman. Also caught in the crossfire was poker pro, Gabe Kaplan. Kaplan, like Maguire, had won thousands of dollars from Ruderman. They had not known that it wasn’t actually Ruderman’s money that they were winning, so you can just imagine their surprise when the bankruptcy trustees came calling. Of course, all these issues exploded long ago, now the time has come for the players to make their move.
Kaplan’s Decision
While Tobey Maguire tried his hardest to escape from paying up, Gabe Kaplan had readily decided to give back half his winnings from Ruderman to the bankruptcy trustees. Of course, to be fair, Maguire has more than $400,000 to pay up, if the trustees get their way. Gabe Kaplan, on the other hand, has about $62,000 of winnings and will only have to return $27,900. By doing so, Kaplan will be avoiding any legal proceedings and generally making life easier. Of course, the proposal has yet to be accepted and it’s unknown if the trustees will be satisfied with this.
Meanwhile, Tobey Maguire is still in something of a pinch. The trustees still say that he owes more than $400,000. He’s insisting, however, that the more than $100,000 that he lost to Ruderman should offset this amount. Nothing has been decided yet, but the issues getting hotter by the minute. Maguire, on his side, has been collecting evidence to support his claims. He has a series of checks that prove how he did lose some money to Kaplan. He also showed some proof from a bank account that he has been specifically using for his poker games.
Indeed, it might just become one huge courtroom drama if the matter does go to court. Maguire might do well to take a leaf out of Kaplan’s book and try to settle the matter outside of the courtroom. It’s certainly going to do him loads of good, especially now that his reputation is in tatters due to this entire matter.
