Full Tilt Poker and PokerStars Bans US Players

If you think that the political climate for poker in the United States has been getting better with the recent attempts at poker regulation, then you certainly thought wrong. Don’t worry, though, because I doubt that anybody saw this coming. The Justice Department in the US has just charged the owners of PokerStars, Full Tilt, and Absolute Poker with bank fraud, money laundering, and illegal gambling expenses, internet domains were seized, and bank accounts were frozen. The poker industry is possibly in the worst dilemma that it has ever faced and the major sites have already pulled out of the US market before things got even worse, with Full Tilt Poker and PokerStars leading the exodus. Carbon poker is now the safest place to play online and has benefitted from a huge increase in traffic.

The Ax has Fallen

Online Casinos have long since banned US players from their sites, but poker sites have not yet followed suit. Online poker, thus, flourished quite well in the US, albeit illegally. With the Department of Justice cracking down on the major poker sites, though, the poker sites have decided that it might be more prudent to cease operations on US instead. A statement released by Full Tilt Poker confirmed that they would no longer allow US citizens to play at their site until such time that the case has been resolved. PokerStars has done the same. Of course, both sites have promised that the cashouts would proceed as normal. That is, if you have money on the site, you’ll surely be able to get it. Both PokerStars and Full Tilt are very reputable, lawsuit or no, so users can be pretty certain that they will still get their money despite everything that has happened. US players would no longer be able to access FTP or PS, but those living outside the country still could. If you live in the US and attempt to do so, you’ll see a message from the Justice Department about the issue.

The Aftermath

US players’ reactions to the new development ranged from mildly irate to pure outrage. Those who play for fun were certainly irritated by the grossly exaggerated actions of the court. Those who rely on poker purely for their income were pretty much flummoxed. They don’t even know where they’re going to start, and if predictions are anywhere near correct, then this whole debacle is likely to take a while. Poker pros have mostly kept silent about the issue, but Tom Dwan, a Full Tilt Poker Pro, mentioned in his Twitter that he wasn’t worried about getting paid. He told his followers that it might take a while, but it will definitely happen. He ended on an ominous note, saying “Good luck if ur not on FTP/PS.”

Where to play now?

Traffic has massively jumped over the past two days at Carbon Poker as they are one of the few poker rooms to still accept players from the USA and they released the following statement yesterday “We are still accepting players from around the world and will continue to do so. All players’ funds are 100% safe and secure on CarbonPoker.”
