Dwyte Pilgrim Wins Borgata Open

All eyes were on Dwyte Pilgrim as he blazed through the ranks at the Borgata Poker Open and landed on the final table. After all, many people in the industry, fans and pros alike, consider Dwyte Pilgrim to be one of the best poker players but marvel at why he has yet to have a major title attached to his name. Well, now the stigma of being without a title has finally been lifted off of Pilgrim as he won the WPT Borgata Poker Open in Atlantic City.

The Final Table

There were six people who came back for the final table of the WPT Borgata Poker Open. At sixth place was Ben Klier, followed by Daniel Makowsky, and Brandon Novena. Ofir Mor departed at third place. At that point, only Dwyte Pilgrim and Kia Mohajeri were left to battle each other at the heads up part of the tournament. They battled each other for quite a while before the final hand was played. Kia moved all in with his K-9, what with the board having K-10-9-7. However, Pilgrim had Q-J, and thus had the perfect recipe for a better hand. With the river showing relatively insignificant cards. It was dwyte’s hand that ultimately won, earning him a nifty $733,802.

Pilgrim’s Win

In the poker industry, winning can sometimes become less about the money and more about the prestige. There’s just something special about finally earning a title. It’s a validation of sorts – the proof that they have reached a milestone in their career, that they’ve touched the summit, that they’ve been there. This is, perhaps, why some poker pros persist in joining poker tournaments despite the amount of money they can win at cash games. This is probably the reason why Dwyte was so emotional over his win. It wa a rare moment in poker, to be sure. Immediately following the announcement of his win, Dwyte ran off the stage and went directly to Mike Sexton and Vince Van Patten. He dropped to his knees and practically fell face down on the floor. He stayed like that for several long seconds, and after which he stood up and wiped some tears of absolute happiness from his eyes.

The people were undoubtedly touched by this spectacle, as Dwyte got a standing ovation, not only from the crowd, but also from Kia Mohajeri, whom he had beaten at the heads up to get to the title. It was a truly powerful moment, and a lot were moved by it. “I don’t care what happens. I showed these guys how to play from beginning to end”, Dwight had said before the final hand was dealt, and sure enough, his win had validated that boast.
