It’s always shocking how much people would do for a bit of money. It gets even scarier when you’re a professional poker player and it’s pretty easy for people to know whenever you win a big chunk of cash. Some robbers are just out there, waiting to pounce, just like Dwayne Johnstone and his accomplice. Thankfully, however, the authorities are always there to lend a helping hand and to apprehend the guilty. Thus, Dwayne Johnston is now facing a two-year sentence in prison for his crime.
The Story
Basically, what happened was this: back in January of 2008, Jason Potter had just finished at 31st place in the Aussie Millions Main Event. He had quite a bit of cash on him, which made him a prime target for would-be thieves. Potter, oblivious about the threat to him, ate at McDonald’s and on his way home, got mugged. One of the robbers struck him in the head, stunning him. They then proceeded to steal the money from Potter – a hefty sum of $31,000. Of course, the police were on the case immediately. The next day, both robbers were caught and were revealed to by Dwayne Johnstone and Vhyharn Arumughasamy. Both pleaded guilty and were sentenced to a few years in prison.
A Delinquent
Johnstone’s lawyers, however, are insisting that the sentence is much too harsh. They are arguing that Johnstone was suffering from brain injury at the time of the incident, having been assaulted himself prior to mugging Potter. They also emphasized that Johnstone was suffering from depression and that this should be taken into consideration. Also, the lawyers believe that the court is not giving Johnstone enough credit for pleading guilty to the crime. As such, the lawyers made an appeal in order to help Johnstone and possibly shorten his sentence. However, the Court of Appeals apparently thought that the sentence was fair and just and thus rejected Johnstone’s lawyers’ appeal. This wasn’t the first time that Johnstone got in trouble with the law, however, and has in fact had 69 previous convictions, is a known drug addict, and to top it all off, he was on parole during the time of the robbery.
Potter has learned his lesson from the incident, however, and has admitted that he was pretty naïve for thinking that he could walk back to his hotel room alone after winning a big sum. That $31,000 stolen from his is now just a small fraction of his entire bankroll as he is currently enjoying quite a successful career with over $1.5 million in winnings.
