Doyle Brunson, the Godfather of Poker, is a mainstay in the various poker tournament circuits, so it would feel rather ‘wrong’ to actually see him sitting one out. However, due to an impending dental surgery, this is exactly what Doyle Brunson will have to do. He just backed out of the PartyPoker Premier League IV and plans to skip the other tournaments as well, coming back only on May for the WSOP.
What Will he Miss out On?
The Texas Dolly may be one of the best poker players in the world, but he isn’t immune to old age. This time around, he will have to undergo a dental procedure that spans for five and a half hours in all. It seems to have cropped up quite suddenly, considering how Doyle was already announced as a participant in the PartyPoker Premier League IV just last month. As a result, Doyle had to back out of the Premier League, stating that he might not be fully recovered by then. He expressed much regret in having to do so as it would have been “great exposure for DoylesRoom”. But then again, he says that there is no way he can be “100% recovered” from the surgery so he had to cancel.
He will also have to miss the WPT L.A. Poker Classic, even though it is one of his favorite tournaments. He also decided to back out from the PokerStars North American Poker Tour (NAPT) and also the National Heads-Up Poker Championship. Although these tournaments won’t be taking place instantly after his operation, and Doyle Brunson will have had quite some time to recover, the Texas Dolly still decided to back out. He believes that there is no use in playing unless he is at his best. “The competition”, according to Brunson,” has gotten so good you need to feel good physically as well as mentally to have a chance to win.”
When Will He be Back?
That said, he revealed that he will have to follow his “gut feeling” and only come back from his hiatus this coming May for the 2010 WSOP. He’s going to relax until then and, hopefully, be in top shape once the tournament begins. So, this means that we probably won’t be seeing much of Doyle Brunson until May 28, the schedule for the $50,000 buy-in Player’s Championship. It’s going to be quite a work-out for him since it’s slated to be one of the most challenging fields for this year from the way it’s set up. Still, we shouldn’t worry overly much. Doyle Brunson has shown great resilience before, and is sure to bounce back perfectly after this one too.
