Taking on Kim Nguyen at heads up for Event no. 19, $2500 six-max limit hold’em tournament, Daren Woods went on to win his first ever WSOP bracelet. In fact, it’s his very first WSOP final table appearance, though he did have four cashes last year. He bested a pretty tough final table and won himself a sizable $213,431 first place prize. He is now the third Brit to win a WSOP bracelet this year.
About Woods
Darren Wood’s story is something that you would hear from a lot of young poker professionals. At 26 years old, Woods is on his third year at the WSOP. His first try was on 2009, but he wasn’t able to cash in any event. On his second try, he seemed to have learned quite a lot because he managed to cash in four events. That’s a huge improvement, all things considered, and it certainly looks like Woods is getting better and better as time goes on. This year, not only did he just ‘cash’, he actually won a tournament. Woods had actually been an accountant before he became a professional poker player. He decided to quit his job, however, when he realized that he was actually making more through the game rather than his 9 to 5. His decision certainly paid off as he is now the proud owner of a WSOP bracelet and winner of a huge cash prize.
Heads up against Nguyen
What was interesting about the event was that it really seemed like Kim Nguyen would be the winner, and also the first female WSOP bracelet winner at an open event since Vannesa Selbst. Her performance was simply astounding. She would have made history had it not been for Darren Woods. Nguyen held the lead as they entered heads up. Woods, however, took the lead from her early on, and was particularly relentless. Nguyen retook the lead quite a number of times, but she couldn’t hold on to it long enough, what with Woods’ aggressiveness. At the final hand, Nguyen was pretty short-stacked, so she went all in before the flop with KC2C. Woods had fH2H. The board was revealed to be KH6S4DJS4C. It looked like the match would go to Nguyen and she would double up, but then a 4 was revealed on the river, and Nguyen went out at 2nd place. Woods then went on to become the winner of the bracelet, title, and money.
