Czech Government Follows US Lead on Online Poker Crackdown

If the US was completely alone on their hatred for online poker, then the industry would have a bigger chance of reclaiming what once was. Unfortunately for us, there are some governments that are like-minded with the United States, and one of them has already begun its own crackdown on online poker. The Czech Government, not quite a fan of the industry, has announced that they want the online poker rooms to be shut down and has even asked their police department to facilitate it.

This is the Time

One sure way to defeat your enemy is to strike while he is at his weakest – it’s probably not the most honorable thing to do, but then again, all’s fair in love and war. With the online poker industry suffering through what might possibly be its darkest days, enemies of the industry have just found the perfect opportunity to strike out. The Czech government is a perfect example. A spokesperson maintains that they have long since asked the police to do something about it but the police have always maintained that “no criminal activity is being committed”. In fact, this most recent appeal of theirs is pretty much just as fruitless as the previous ones.

Just Legalize it

Online poker has yet to be regulated or legalized in the Czech Republic, but the government is not closed to the idea. The only reason why online poker is not allowed there is because the current law does not extend to it, as online betting in the country can only take the form of fixed-odds betting, which in turn is offered by five companies which are regulated and licensed to do so. These companies cannot legally provide online poker yet, which leads to a standstill. Online poker players from the Czech republic have thus decided to turn to other avenues, namely the online poker sites. However, all hope is not lost for online poker in the country as the government is expecting that a new bill will be presented before the parliament on 2015.

Hopefully, it’s going to be earlier, but the likeliness of that is in question. Still, at least there’s hope and nobody’s really hypocritically harping about morality issues. The US should take a leaf out of Czech’s page and straighten the issues out, keep the whole issue neat and tidy instead of a protectionist movement masquerading as a championing of morality.
