With all the controversy surrounding inaugural EPL champ, Chino Rheem, it seemed imperative for the league to do something before their name is forever tainted by the stigma attached to Rheem’s current reputation. To have a huge scandal attached to its name right from the very start was probably one of the worst things that could have happened with the EPL – but that’s exactly what happened and now they have to deal with it. As such, they have decided to place Rheem under probation for ‘violating the league’s code of conduct’.
Chino Rheem’s Debts
Just recently, a big scandal exploded in the poker forums concerning Chino Rheem’s unpaid debts. It was revealed that Rheem had ‘borrowed’ Pokerstars money from a fellow player with the promise of paying back through Full Tilt money. The player was more than ready to oblige since Rheem was fresh off a big win then. But as it turned out, Rheem avoided paying him back, to the point that the player had stopped expecting his money to be returned. He considered the borrowed money as stolen money and posted about it on the forums. Sure enough, some people had posted tales about similar experiences with Rheem and it became apparent that Rheem would be taking home far less than what people expected him to when he won the EPL’s inaugural event.
EPL’s Code of Conduct
Not wanting the league’s name to be tarnished by this issue, the league had decided to put Rheem on probation while he has “ongoing personal financial obligations”. The probation will continue until such a time that Rheem has paid off his debts. If he does any more misdeeds from this point onwards, then Rheem will be suspended from the league. The league is also urging him to dedicate his poker winnings to pay back the debts he incurred. Once he does, his probationary status will be lifted, and he can continue playing in tournaments hosted by the league.
They have assured that Rheem is already beginning to rectify his mistakes and has even used a portion of his winnings in order to pay back those said debts. However, it’s unknown whether league membership will really be enough of an incentive for Rheem to turn over a new leaf. There are already some people writing the EPL off as something that’s “doomed from the start”, so what’s to stop Rheem from ignoring his debts just as he used to?
