Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier Considers going Pro for StarCraft 2

Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier, with his trademark dyed hair which can be of any color depending on his whim, is one of the most prominent poker pros today and sponsored by PokerStars. But it’s not his crazy hair color that draws the attention, it’s actually his immense skill in the game. Now, however, he seems to be considering going pro for a different sort of game: StarCraft 2.

I do this for Aiur…

Alright, scratch that incredibly nerdy phrase; ElkY’s not really doing it for Aiur. Still, those who have played the game StarCraft will readily recognize that phrase and will likely recall the throaty voice that accompanies it. Rarely has a game been as celebrated as StarCraft, with its legions of fans worldwide, and even going so far as to have Korea treat it as a real sport, with ‘pros’ battling it out in a field of computers. If you’re keeping up to date at all with the gaming industry, then you’ll probably know that the highly anticipated StarCraft 2 has already been released, and unlike most sequels, it totally surpassed its predecessor. StarCraft 2 is the rave of gaming critics today, and everyone’s saying that it’s the perfect game. ElkY apparently agrees, as he has already played more than 400 games of StarCraft 2 since it came out. In fact, he’s considering going pro for StarCraft but is wondering whether he can balance it with his poker career.

ElkY’s lesser known side

Of course, as fans of the game of poker, we are more familiar with ElkY’s career in the felt. We know that he’s the record holder for most SnG tables played in an hour, that he holds a WPT and an EPT title, and that he has over $6.1 million in tournament winnings. What we don’t know is that ElkY was one of the first ever foreigners to nab a title and go pro in South Korea for StarCraft back in 2001. With StarCraft 2 now out, it’s no wonder that it caught ElkY’s attention. However, he might not have enough time for it since PokerStars swallows quite a chunk of his schedule. He’s a competitive guy, and if he’s going to play StarCraft 2 as a pro, he’s going to play it to win.

He says that he doesn’t want to join tournaments just to lose and that he wants to have time to practice. Currently, he’s trying to balance the two games, but it’s unknown whether he will really abandon one for the other.
