Prop bets are like the ‘underground’ world of the poker industry. It’s ‘betting’ taken to a whole new level; marvelously insane and yet perfectly sensible because this is, after all, a world where people make a living by taking risks and raising the stakes. Ashton Griffin, a famous online cash game player, bet that he could run 70 miles over a 24-hour period. Justin “BoostedJ” Smith was the one who made this prop bet known through his Twitter account and those who partook in the prop bets decided to ‘up the ante’ and bet outrageous amounts – so outrageous, in fact, that the accumulated wagers soon reached up to $1 million.
On a Mere Whim
Griffin and his friends were apparently out drinking when things started going crazy and an insane prop bet was formed. Basically, Griffin had to run 70 miles in a 24-hour period. Taking breaks – which includes eating and drinking – would be allowed, of course. The only requirement was that he complete the number of miles within the set amount of time. Now, here’s the clincher, Griffin was pretty drunk when he made that bet and he only got 5 hours of sleep before he had to begin with the said bet. With Tony “Bond18” Dunst making a thread at TwoPlusTwo that quickly gathered 200 posts, however, Griffing surely couldn’t just back out. Besides, with $1 million in wagers hinging on whether he can or cannot do it, the least he can really do is try. Apparently, though, Griffin already had a bit of experience. He had a similar prop bet a few years back where he had to run home, which was 15 miles away from the sushi restaurant where the bet was made, in under three hours. Griffin succeeded – although he did have to puke a lot as a result.
The Result
When Griffin began running, things were actually looking pretty spiffy. After the first 30 miles, though, Griffin began to slow down. His friend reported that he just went to his room, hobbling up the stairs along the way, and just sort of curled up there. Even through all that, though, Griffin was sure that he would win. Indeed, at the end, he did manage to complete the dare. In fact, he even had 45 minutes to spare. It was an insane prop bet, but Griffin more than showed his gumption by succeeding – nasty hangover or no.
