Young-Shin Im, a female poker player from Korea, has just made history by becoming the first ever female to win at the main event in the Asian Pacific Poker Tour. She got the title at the APPT Cebu Main Event, where she managed to outlast everyone at the final table, including her boyfriend Kim Gap Young, who went out in third place.
A Power Couple
It was a highly charged day at the APPT Cebu when 236 players came for the Main Event, each of them hoping to get a chance at winning the title and the prize money. Nobody expected, though, that at the end of the day, it would be Young-Shin Im who would be nabbing the prestige. For all the skill that this special lady showed, however, people should have expected it. Young-Shin Im displayed remarkable skill throughout the whole tournament, consistently making great decisions, thus earning her way through the ranks. Her boyfriend, Kim Gap Young also showed tremendous skill. In fact, these two faced off quite a lot of times during the whole tournament.
They may have been lovers, but they certainly showed each other no mercy at the felt. If it was not for Fabiano Michael, a player from Australia, these two would have faced off at the heads up portion of the tournament, and it would have been a truly interesting development. As it was, Gap Young fell to Michael, and he ended up at third place, taking $60,000 with him as prize money. Michael and Im were left to do battle by the end of the tournament at heads up. The final hand saw Michael with Pocket 5’s and Im with Ace Six. It was anybody’s game at that point, but then the community cards fell into Im’s favor, handing her the win, the title, and the prize money.
Making History
Im managed to make history with her win by becoming the first female APPT Main Event Winner. She won a sizeable $132,340 as well as the title. She said that she was very “excited and happy” to be get the honor of being the first female winner and also shared that she was happy for her boyfriend too as he was able to make third place. Indeed, this couple showed remarkable skill throughout the tournament and it will be interesting to watch as their careers develop. The next tournament will be held at Sydney Australia on December 7 to 12, qualify for it at PokerStars.com.
