Ever wanted a WSOP bracelet but felt that there’s no way that you can win the WSOP Main Event? Well, no worries: now you can just buy one! You heard that right – you can now buy a WSOP bracelet, and not just those cheap imitation versions either, but an authentic WSOP bracelet won from none other than the Main Event itself. Whose bracelet is it, you ask? Well, it’s Peter Eastgate’s, then the youngest main event winner in history, before the title was usurped by Cada just the year later. He won $9 million for his victory and earned the very bracelet which is now up for sale in Ebay.
Why would someone even consider doing that?
I know what you’re thinking, and yes I do agree that it seems slightly absurd to part with such a rare memorabilia as a WSOP bracelet. Frankly, if it was mine, I wouldn’t let it slip past my fingers – but that’s just me. Peter Eastgate actually has a pretty good reason for letting go of his bracelet. He’s quitting poker, and this is apparently one of the things he needs to do before doing so. He priced his bracelet at $16,000 – but it’s an auction, so chances are that the final price will be much, much more than that. But hey, shipping’s free!
Currently, however, there are no bids yet on the item. All the money he will get from this sale will be donated to UNICEF, for the benefit of children all over the world. The bracelet, apparently, is made of 18kt White Gold studded with 291 diamonds, with an inscription saying “World Series of Poker 2008” hand-painted in silver and decked with black and red card suits below. It’s truly a piece of work – and it must be pretty hard for Eastgate to part with it, but it shows more than anything his determination to quit.
Not the first
Of course, he isn’t the first one to part with a WSOP Bracelet. If you can still remember, TJ Cloutier’s bracelet was the first one to be put up on sale in Ebay, though it wasn’t being sold for charitable purposes. That one caused quite an uproar in the community, especially since the story behind it was obscure. At least Eastgate’s reasons are pretty much clear and he’s doing it for a very good cause. It saddened us to know that he was quitting poker; but there’s little you can do for someone who has lost interest in the game. He has already achieved ‘financial independence’ like he wanted from his win at the Main Event, and now it’s time for him to move on to other pursuits.
