It’s always heartwarming to know that the poker industry has managed to help those in need. It’s always being pegged by those who don’t understand it as a dog-eat-dog world where players are ruthlessly after each other’s throats or, more accurately, each other’s money. But this impression couldn’t be more wrong. The Poker Industry is actually like candy with a caramel center. It’s all hard outside, but inside, it’s soft and gooey. Just this week, the Poker Industry has managed to raise more than $900,000 at the All in For Kids Charity event for Children’s Hospital of Pennsylvania. The event was held at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in New York, and 120 players turned up and battled it out, with John Foley from Boston ending up as the winner.
The Gooey Center
Speaking of things that are soft and gooey on the inside, have I mentioned that Phil Hellmuth was the tournament’s host? He was holding the microphone all night, doing his best to entertain the crown. He gave play by play information at what was going on at each table and was ultimately doing a pretty good job at it. If this guy can do something this good for society, it’s easy to say that the title of “poker player who inspires the most thoughts of homicide” is entirely undeserved. But Hellmuth wasn’t the only one who helped build this tournament. Actor and Comedian, Steve Martin, also played a big role, and so did Amy Tan, author of Saving Fish from Drowning and several other best sellers. Miss Tan has also written two children’s books, namely The Moon Lady and Sagwa, the Chinese Siamese Cat.
Many celebrities turned up for the tournament, as well as several athletes and poker pros. Quite notable too was the presence of several big wigs in the medical industry, with hospital trustees and doctors in attendance, taking some time off their busy schedules to have a little bit of fun playing poker. The poker tournament was sponsored by Jami and Joel Friedman.
For the children
All proceeds of the tournament will be given to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. The money is going to be used as funding for research in fetal medicine which will greatly help improve the health of babies who are yet to be born. This research will benefit thousands of children from across the country as it will make various life-saving therapies more easily available.
